Maryland Exiles Thanksgiving Turkey Trot 7s
is held the Saturday after Thanksgiving and normally includes
an elite, social and high school division. The elite division
winners take home the Charlie Nortje Trophy.
“The Charlie Cup” honors one of Maryland’s greatest
flyhalves who suffered a brain aneurysm during a match and died.
Charlie, also known affectionately as 'Chunk', 24, was a standout
player with Port Elizabeth, South Africa's famed Grey College.
He had been with the club only a short while but made a lasting
impression with Maryland's friends and supporters.
